The company's origins lie in a barn in Härryda, outside Gothenburg, where Johanson and Eliasson shared their passion for furniture trading. With experience in the furniture trade and a focus on Eastern Europe, they began their business, which later included trading with Asia in the late 1970s.

In 1976, new manufacturing facilities were built in Skene, where Artwood is now located. After Lars Eliasson sold his share in the company to Ingemar Johanson in 1981, Johanson ran the company as a family business until his retirement in 2001. Management of the company then passed to Ingemar's daughter Anna-Carin Bengtsson, who bought out the remaining family members in 2017.
