The Thomas floor lamp from the exclusive The Met x Eichholtz collection combines historical sophistication with timeless elegance. Inspired by intricate Chinese woven and lattice patterns that gained immense popularity in 18th-century England, this design unites classic ornamentation with modern clarity.
The delicate frame in matte black is complemented by a solid base of black marble, creating a serene, architectural presence. The handcrafted shade, made of a linen blend from the Netherlands, lends the lamp a warm, soft light. Thomas is a striking statement piece that harmoniously blends history, craftsmanship, and modern living.
Historical inspiration
The Thomas floor lamp is a tribute to the Chinese fretwork patterns that found their way to England at the beginning of the 18th century and quickly became an integral part of elegant furniture design.
This design element gained particular prominence through Thomas Chippendale (1718–1779), whose groundbreaking publication The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director from 1754, which had a lasting impact on English furniture design. The design of the floor lamp is based on a pair of mahogany candlesticks (1755–1760) that were featured in the first edition of this work – now reinterpreted as a timeless designer lamp.
